Man on a bike

I don’t typically discuss my post-processing but today I thought I would mention a few programs that I routinely use.  I store all my pictures in Apple’s Aperture 3.  Most who read this blog are probably familiar with it or know of it.  It’s basically a program to easily store and file all your pictures (i.e. library).  You can also make adjustments to your pictures without making permanent changes.  Most, use Adobe’s Lightroom or the casual photographer will use iPhoto. I’ve used all 3 and iPhoto is definitely more for enthusiast..  Lightroom and Aperture are very similar and I really wouldn’t say one is better than the other.

I use Adobe Photoshop 5 or more recently 6.0 (beta).  I use this when needing to make more complicated fixes or needing to layer my pictures.

Last, I routinely use Nik Software’s Silver Efex 2 and Color Efex 4.  Both allow very controlled and  unique changes and I highly recommend both.

I’ve posted a prior shot of this guy with cars flying by him.  This is just one shot when he was patiently waiting for traffic to clear long enough for him to go.  This shot was edited with Aperture 3, Photoshop 6, and Nik Software Color Efex 4.

Sleep

I was at O’hare not to long ago and was heading up the escalator when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a young lady asleep just outside ticketing. I have always found it amazing how people can just fall asleep anywhere. I guess if you’re desperate, anything is possible. Well, here is a picture of the young lady sleeping as I was riding up the escalator.

You call this talent?

As we were walking to the hotel and stopped, waiting to cross Michigan Avenue, we noticed this guy on a bike smoking a cigarette and balancing himself in one spot for what seem to be an eternity. While multitasking, he had many cars passing him left and right. I definitely think this is a talent but don’t think it’s a talent I want?

The shot was taken with my Leica M9 and 50mm summilux set at continuous shooting, f/1.4, and 1/45 shutter speed. Because of the low aperture and the small size of the camera I was able to successfully get this shot at such a low shutter speed. Last, I keep my camera on continuous shooting so that I have a better opportunity of getting a sharper image and catching the action act the exact, right time.

Bath time

We are very fortunate that our baby girl absolutely loves bath time.  In greater than 5 months she has not once cried or got upset during bath time.  It’s also a great time to take a picture of her.  Here is a recent picture after her bath.

Repetition

I spent almost 4 years of my life in Des Moines, IA going to school.  Twice a year I head back to my old school and each time I spend some time wandering around downtown.  It’s not even comparable to Chicago or New York but they have a very nice and beautiful downtown.

A couple of years ago as I was walking around, I noticed that  there were a bunch of bike racks with bikes to rent.  Since I don’t live there I’m unsure how often they are used but I think it’s a good idea.

Hopewell Church

As I’ve stated many times in the past, I always enjoy taking pictures of old churches.  I’m starting to have a good collection of them (maybe I’ll post them all together some time).

This church is near my home town and was taken early evening.  This is always a great time to capture landscapes because the shadows are not contrasty and you can often times get great exposure of both the foreground and background.

P.S.  I may start reposting some of my post from early last year.  I have a lot more followers and think many will appreciate some of my early pictures (don’t worry, I have plenty of fresh pictures also).

Sony NEX-7 & Zeiss 24mm f1.8 shots

I posted my first picture using my new Sony NEX-7 on Saturday.  I used my Leica 50mm summilux (80mm equivalent) lens and I had a few people inquire about pictures with the Zeiss 24mm f1.8 lens (38mm equivalent).  Today’s post includes pictures using the 24mm lens.

So far I’m extremely impressed with the quality of the camera and lens.  My previous camera experience includes “point and shoot”, Canon dSLR’s (including the 5D Mark II), and my Leica M9-P.  I’ve grown accustomed to shooting with manual focus and forgot how nice it is sometimes to just let the camera do it.  Most of the reviews out there will tell you the Sony NEX-7 autofocus is slower than other cameras in its class but acceptable.  I don’t have any other experience shooting with other micro 4/3 cameras but so far I have absolutely no complaints about the speed.  I think the speed is 100% acceptable and most would not be disappointed.

I use Apple’s Aperture for my camera raw processing and library and currently they don’t support the NEX-7 raw files.  I’m trialling Phase One’s Capture One software since it does support it (I actually like the software but unsure if I want to use it in my workflow).

The pictures today are jpegs converted from raw files in Capture One.  Little, to no editing was performed.
