Hi Gage,
Do you have a favorite lens that you like to shoot most often on your Leicas? I recently found a version II 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH. I knew about the possible softness wide open but didn’t realize how soft and glowy it could be.
I see you’re shooting with the latest FLE version. Any issue with it blocking the viewfinder and shooting wide open into bright light? I use a ND filter on my 50 Lux and have on my 35 Lux but the softness wide open has me perplexed as to what to do.
Duane,
You are right, I have the latest 35mm summilux FLE. It’s a wonderful lens that is very sharp wide open and creates beautiful colors. In my opinion it is not too obstructive in the viewfinder (the lens hood has a cut out to see through). I don’t notice any “flare” when shooting into the sun but obviously if you are going to shoot wide open you will need a ND filter and that could potentially cause flaring (I’ve had it happen with my 21mm super-elmar).
The answer to my favorite lens, I would have to say my 50mm summicron APO. It’s razor sharp (some don’t like that) and is extremely compact. The 50mm focal length I believe is perfect for everyday shooting. The problem with the 35mm focal length is that I feel like I have to get too close to the subject. It’s fine if you are shooting more than one person or if you are shooting street photography but I find it difficult for everyday use shooting my little girl.
Yesterday, I purchased the Voiglaender 50mm nokton 1.5 (chrome version) and so far like it. My M240 is on its way back from Germany getting the eyelets fixed thus I’ve only shot with my Monochrom. It’s definitely softer than the noctilux and summicron I own. Also, the bokeh I would consider is neutral and doesn’t have the unique character the Leica’s have. Even though I may have just sounded negative about it, I kind of like having a lens that is not so perfect.
