Here’s a picture from a few years ago when we were vacationing in Gatlinberg. I can’t count how many times I’ve been there, but every time I enjoy going into all the unique shops.
This picture was taken at a creek in the Smoky Mountains just outside of Gatlinberg. Even though I like the scenery, there’s too much green for vibrant pictures. This one seem to work fine.
I took this picture over a year ago. I was really hoping to get a shot that included the fence, sand, ocean, and sky but unfortunately I couldn’t. The picture turned out okay, I only wish there were more clouds.
I have a lot of interest when it comes to photography. One minute I’m interested in shooting people and the next I’m interested in shooting landscape. One type of photography that I have not spent much time with is time lapse (long exposure). Time lapse photography is where you set your camera to a very long exposure (typically greater than 10 seconds). Mostly, this will be done at night but can be done during the day if using a neutral density filter. A good example is Ben Canales. He has a website, The Star Trail that has some awesome sky shots.
One of the first times I attempted this type of photography was in 2008 with my Canon 5D Mark II. I was at Huntington Beach near Cleveland and was taking pictures of Lake Erie as a storm began to arise. This shot was a 13 second exposure. I really like how the water looks in this picture. Only thing I wish is that I caught more of the break wall in the picture and I should have had the camera closer to the ground.
I recently posted “Our Savior“, which was my favorite picture taken at the old cemetery southwest of our house. Here’s another picture but from a different angle. Again, I think black and white works great here. I also think the “blown out” appearance of the background helps make this picture work.
Here’s another shot I took back in 2009. This is an old church that sits on old U.S. 50 in my home town of Lawrenceville, IL. I have driven by it for years and always liked the look of it. I decided one evening to attempt some long exposures and thought this church would be a great subject. The picture turned out well. My only wish was that I would like to have some clouds in the sky. It would definitely add some drama to the image.
A couple years ago my brother-in-law and I were driving around near my home town looking for places to take pictures of. We came across this old house but there were too many trees near the front of it to get a good perspective. We walk around back and I noticed this old run down shed. As I was setting up for the shot it began to rain. Fortunately, my friend was able to keep my camera dry by holding an umbrella. Personally, I was just happy that no one came up on us since we were standing awkwardly close to one another.
Even though I didn’t have much time to take pictures on my San Diego trip, I feel like I captured some good ones. Here is another picture from Balboa Park. I really wish I could go back, the architecture as I mentioned before was spectacular.
I’m sure most of you noticed that I take a lot of black and white pictures. I don’t know if it is just a “phase” or that my interests have changed. Most recently, I’ve began shooting both RAW and black and white jpeg so that I can get an idea of what will work best.
This shot was taken at the Outer Banks. I have both a color and black and white version but prefer the black and white.
As I was walking with my friend Elijah in San Diego, I decided to stop in the middle of the street and take a picture of the on coming traffic. At night, the car lights can add an additional dimension to the scene and in this shot it gives you a sense that they are coming at you (technically they were) but in reality I was safe because of the light.
Here in northeast Indiana there are many nature preserves. Probably the most well known is the ACRES Land Trust. ACRES Land Trust is made up of many preserves throughout northeast Indiana. All are free and have nice trails.
One after noon I drove to one of the preserves west of my home. This preserve is mostly forest and swamp. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to capture any exciting shots (the foliage did not have much colors). I took this one shot of of an isolated tree within one of the swamps.
